I highly recommend checking out his Calder Cup 2014 Possession Preview over at NHL Numbers. He's a great follow on twitter for possession and usage data all the way from major junior leagues to the NHL.

Prospect Signing
According to CapGeek, it appears C Graham Black has signed a 3 year ELC with the Devils. It appears to be a two way deal ($65k AHL/$650K NHL cap hit split). Looks like he picked up a nice $75k/yr signing bonus. While he had a monster season in the WHL (34-63-97 in 69 games) as one of the oldest players in the league, it is important to note that he had to overcome issues resulting from his battle with Graves' disease over the years so he is a bit of a special case.

AHL 4/16
Albany defeated Portland 3-2 (SO). Scoring for the Devils was Boucher (Tedenby, K. Zajac) and Kelly (K. Zajac, Merrill). Matteau and Sislo scored in the shootout. Kinkaid stopped 20 of 22 shots and 4 of 5 attempts in the shootout. Albany outshot Portland 30-22 and went 0/2 on the PP and 2/3 on the PK. Here is the gamesheet.

C Graham Black and D Joe Faust now with Albany on ATO's (Source). I hope this leads towards an ELC for Black but I don't see how Faust would fit in next year unless he took an AHL deal and was stashed in the ECHL. Seems more like a reward for Faust after 4 years of college.

4/2 Prospect and ECHL Update

Prospect Notes:
- LW Ben Johnson has signed an ATO with the Albany Devils now that his OHL season in Windsor has come to an end. Maybe we'll find out shortly if he is going to get an ELC with the organization.

- C Blake Coleman has announced he is returning to Miami for his senior season:

-  Swift Current PBP announcer, Shawn Mullin, interviewed C Graham Black whose WHL career has come to an end. You can listen to it here. When asked about his future with the Devils, Black was careful with his words not to reveal too much. I imagine he will be signed but who knows? Black's cryptic answer was, "Not really, there's nothing worth mentioning. I don't have any concrete facts or anything, so I would probably not rather talk on that." Take that however you want, but it seems like he doesn't want to upset Lou by saying too much. I could be wrong though.

- A fair amount of prospects either have to be signed or the rights will be relinquished to them. Below are the prospects and what I believe to be the correct deadlines. I figure Johnson, Thomson, Black, Bell, and Gedig are likely to be signed.
  • Players drafted out of CHL (6/1 deadline): Ben Johnson, Ben Thomson, Graham Black, Artur Gavrus, Myles Bell
  • Players drafted out of the NCAA (8/15 deadline): Joe Faust, Derek Rodwell, Curtis Gedig

Looking at the Upcoming UDFA Goalie Group

I've been intending to write a post about the upcoming undrafted free agents (UDFA) coming out of the NCAA and CHL over the next few weeks but decided that my time would be best served to just focus on the goaltenders. This is for a number of reasons. First, the Devils are looking at a logjam of skaters available for Albany and the ECHL next year. By my unofficial count, here is a breakdown of players that could be available for those teams:
  • Coming off of AHL Deals (Terms Unknown): Kelly, McKelvie, K. Zajac, McPherson, Demkov
  • RFA's: Gelinas, Larsson, Burlon, Wohlberg, Timmins, Tedenby, Boychuk, Clermont, Young, Kinkaid, Pesonen
  • UFA's: Urbom, Hoeffel, Janssen, Pelley, Sislo
  • Under Contract: Merrill, Matteau, Boucher, Hrabarenka, Severson, Wedgewood, Scarlett, Helgeson, Whitney, Sestito, D. Zajac
  • Sign or Lose Rights: Rodwell, Gedig, Faust, Johnson, Thomson, Black, Bell, Gavrus
  • Could Turn Pro Early: Coleman
I plan on going into more detail on all of that in a later post, but the fact remains that there is no shortage of skaters available even with the Devils not re-signing all of their players and not signing all of the available prospects to retain rights. Obviously a decent number of those guys will not be retained.

The second and most important reason I wanted to take a look at the UDFA G crop for this spring was the lack of performance by Wedgewood and Clermont this year and the lack of depth as Anthony Brodeur isn't really a prospect with NHL potential. As of 3/11/14 here is what Wedgewood and Clermont have done this season and in their short pro careers:

  • Wedgewood 2013-14 (AHL): 26 GP 1417 MIN, 9-12-3, 2.75 GAA, .888 SV% - (SV% ranks 49th out of 50). It's important to note that his brief cameo during 2012-13 in the AHL didn't produce encouraging results (5 GP 242 MIN, .886 SV%) and that his SV% was just .900 on a horrendous Trenton team where he played 48 GP and 2741 MIN. While he may have been unfairly overwhelmed in Trenton, nothing he has done at the AHL level has shown that he is on his way to being a regular NHL G in the future.
  • Clermont has posted a sub .899 SV% in parts of 3 seasons in the ECHL and has hardly seen the AHL. I think it's clear that he's pretty much a non-prospect at this point and the fact he isn't even dressing for Orlando right now, whether it's by injury, or coaches choice, gives me a feeling that he is likely not to be retained by the Devils thus opening up a spot for them to add an UDFA G. He also wasn't a standout in junior hockey further hurting his case.
What I would like to see is the Devils not qualify an offer to Clermont who is a RFA and then send Wedgewood back to the ECHL for 2014-15. Then bring in an UDFA G to compete with Kinkaid for playing time in Albany as Kinkaid's play has really slipped since the turn of the year. I'm not saying that the new guy would work out, but given the disastrous pro careers for Clermont and Wedgewood so far, it's a gamble worth taking. So who are these G that may be out there? (in no particular order)

Career SV%: .915 SV% in 148 GP

-- How much has he benefited from playing on some strong Kelowna teams?

Notes: I'm not including Freshman like Christian Frey or Cole Huggins or Juniors like Clay Witt, Keegan Asmundson, or Jimmy Sarjeant who hardly saw time before this year. All stats of 3/12/14. All ages as of 2/1/14. Let me know if you think I'm missing anyone or made any errors.

My opinion: The intriguing NCAA options to me are Rumpel, Stevens, Motte, Hildebrand, and DeSmith. For the CHL options, I think Palazzese and Laurikainen are interesting.

Miles Wood Update

Stats are almost impossible to find on Wood so here are some news and notes on him from around the web this past week.

- Wood has been named to the NEPSAC 2014 All-New England Team.

- New England Hockey Journal (2/19):
"Noble & Greenough (18-6-1) – Junior forward Miles Wood de-committed from Brown University last week while collecting five points in two games for Nobles."

- According to The Providence Journal, he will attend either Boston University or Boston College.
"Miles Wood, whose older brother Tyler is a freshman defenseman at Brown, was a potential program-changer for the Bears. The word is he is likely to end up at either Boston University or Boston College. His adviser is East Greenwich’s Peter Fish, a former BU teammate of Terrier coach David Quinn of Cranston."

- Over the Boards has Wood ranked as the top uncommitted college prospect.
"This season, Wood has taken a large step in his development. Nobles coach Brian Day quoted to us, on Miles’ development, “Miles successfully has worked very hard this season to become a more savvy player with the puck who will take any open ice that is available to him but will move the puck when that is the play to be made.  Through the course of this season we have seen a growing level of creativity in his game and a better understanding of how to create more time and space for he and his teammates.  An incredibly dynamic player who will attack when he has the puck, he is developing into a more dynamic player who not only has the ability to finish but who has the ability to make those around him better. He is a great kid and a joy to coach.”

A surprisingly deft passer in a big man’s body, with a lethal shot. Deadly with speed behind the puck as he weaves towards the net, word on the street is that Wood’s likely going to end up on Commonwealth Ave – BU or BC."

Albany is now 9th in the conference with 57 points. 4 points separate 4th thru 9th.

Roster Notes:
Albany has added emergency backup G, 40 year old Bronx native, Anthony Felice. He's been the Devils minor league emergency standby for a number of years now. He's played in 2 ECHL games (2010-11, 2011-12) for Trenton. In 3 minutes of time he has stopped 2 of 3 shots. Mike Ashmore had this nice write up on him from 2/18/11 when he appeared for Trenton for his ECHL debut. He's also dressed for the Lowell and Albany Devils before and even practiced with the New Jersey Rockin' Rollers back in the day if anyone remembers the roller hockey league. I think he's still a manager at a fitness club as his full time job.

Also D Jon Merrill has been returned for the Olympic break. Larsson can play during the break but I don't think Gelinas is allowed to.
